Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin last week won the category “best use of technology in education” at the national ICT Excellence Award, an award sponsored by Microsoft. The win comes as Science Gallery has welcomed over 185,000 visitors.

In its opening year Science Gallery has established itself as the premier venue for exploring the cutting edge of technology and technology research. For example the current exhibition INFECTIOUS hosts the world’s first live epidemic simulation using RFID tags. The gallery has hosted numerous exhibits illustrating Ireland’s excellence in ICT research, including Metropolis (a multi disciplinary research programme based in Trinity College Dublin) and shorter workshops on everything from developing iPhone apps to networking events for people in the industry.

Since opening in February 2008 the gallery has shown six major exhibition, hosted hundreds of events and workshops and piloted an innovative programme for involving young people with science and technology. Science Gallery has been able to bring the most exciting Irish research to a wider audience.

Science Gallery is supported by some of the world’s leading technology and science companies through the Science Circle including Dell, Google, ICON, Paccar and Wyeth. Science Gallery’s funding partners are Ulster Bank and the Wellcome Trust, and is an initiative of Trinity College Dublin.

The current exhibition INFECTIOUS – an exhibition exploring mechanisms of contagion and strategies of containment – runs at Science Gallery until 17 July. It has already welcomed nearly 23,000 visitors and received substantial media coverage, including Science magazine.  INFECTIOUS is open Tuesday-Friday 12.00-8.00pm and Saturday-Sunday 12.00-6.00pm. Admission Free. Please note that the INFECTIOUS exhibition is not suitable for visitors under the age of 15.
