Trinity’s Head of Sport presidency concludes

Michelle Tanner, Head of Sport at Trinity has recently concluded her Presidency of the European Network of Academic Sports Services (ENAS) linking 22 countries across the continent. Michelle has held the role since being elected in 2013 and was on the board of Student Sport Ireland for 17 years.

Michelle is the first President from Ireland and the first female to take on this role which aims to increase participation in university sports by working alongside partners and sponsors to assist third-level institutions in developing their sporting culture. When asked about her tenure at ENAS she noted: ‘I feel enormously proud to have been afforded the opportunity to represent Trinity on the European and International sporting stage. Our successes and achievements speak volumes about the increasing importance and relevance of University sport within the wider educational context. I would like to thank the Provost and all my Trinity colleagues for their unwavering support during this role, I am very fortunate to work with a brilliant team here in Trinity Sport’. Among her achievements was partnering with the European Commission for a #BeActive campaign.

As Head of Sport and Recreation at Trinity, she, has responsibility for all sport and recreation matters at the University. The role involves managing and developing the extensive sport and recreational facilities, services and programmes provided by the Trinity Sport for students, staff, graduates and the local community in line with the strategic goals of the University. Recently Michelle has spearheaded Trinity’s “Raising Our Game” Strategy for Sport which is enabling an investment of €13m in sports facilities and programmes over three years to 2018.

In addition to her many accolades, Michelle has also been profiled as one of the top 50 most influential women in Irish Sport by Sport for Business for her efforts in promoting equal opportunities for girls and women to participate in, and benefit from, sport and physical activity. She is a former international Volleyball player with the Irish Senior Women’s Team, and has been involved in the Irish Sports and Leisure Industry since graduating in 1992.
