Trinity Takes Part in Comhrá ’14 which Breaks the World Record for the Longest Irish Conversation

Trinity College’s Irish Language Office and An Cumann Gaelach student society were part of Comhrá ’14, which broke the world record for the longest ever Irish language conversation. The event which was run by Seachtain na Gaeilge, ran over 169 hours from 12pm Sunday 5th at to 1pm Sunday 12th October and was broadcast live on snag.ie.

The Irish Language Office took part in the successful event on Wednesday 8th October from 12pm to 1pm, with help from a group of students from An Scéim Chónaithe / the Irish Language residency scheme, who led the conversation. The event was open to Trinity staff and students, and overall around 20 people took part. The group hosted a game of Scrabble ‘as Gaeilge’ in the College’s  Seomra na Gaeilge, showcasing the facility which was opened in 2012 to viewers watching the event.  Trinity’s An Cumann Gaelach society also supported the world record attempt in a private session which ran for 10 hours overnight from 11pm on October 9th to 9am on October 10th.

Other participants in Comhrá ’14 included conversation circles of Conradh na Gaeilge branches, Irish language committees, schools, cultural organisations, youth clubs, national and local authorities.
