Trinity Student Wins Intervarsity Cross Country Championships

Fourth year Molecular Medicine student, Maria O’Sullivan of the Dublin University Harriers and Athletics Club (DUHAC), has just won the Women’s Intervarsity Cross Country Championship at Cork IT. This win follows Maria’s 4th place in the Inter Club’s Cross Country competition. It is over thirty years since a Trinity woman won the Universities Cross Country title, when Mary Friel won it in 1983.
Maria, from Clontarf, who also runs for Raheny Shamrocks, was pushed all the way to the finish line by her Trinity team mate, first year Speech and Language Therapy Masters student, Becky Woods who took the individual Silver medal. Other Trinity winners, Claire McCathy (English) in 8th place and Sorcha Humphreys of (Physiotherapy) in 10th place, gave Trinity four positions in the top ten to retain The Cheetahs Intervarsity Trophy. It was only the second time since 1981that Trinity retained their Women’s Intervarsity Cross Country title.
It was an historic occasion for DUHAC Women as on only one other occasion since the Cross Country Intervarsity for Women was first held in 1966 have two Trinity Women taken individual medal when in 2011, Bryony Teston took 2nd place and Becky Woods 3rd place.
