Trinity Sport celebrates new scholars

Posted on: 23 January 2017

The Dining Hall was the venue for this year’s celebration event for Trinity Sport’s 2016/2017 scholars. Fifty-eight of the 68 scholars were present, which was attended by family, friends and college officers including Senior Dean Aidan Seery and Director of Student Services Alison Oldam. A number of recipients were unable to attend due to fixtures in which they were competing for the college.

Speaking beforehand, Deputy Head of Sport Matthew Dossett commented: “The pillars of support around any athlete are vital, even more so in a university setting where there are additional skills required and pressures to be managed. The revised scholarship scheme ensures we are able to provide this enhanced environment to our student athletes, and also to complement what’s already being provided by governing body talent programmes and elite pathways.”

Head of Sport Michelle Tanner’s welcome address was followed by a speech from Heather McArdle of sponsors Bank of Ireland. A former sportswoman herself, Heather told how sport is a vital part of life and the community and perhaps more importantly, it allows student athletes to develop many skills that will transfer directly into their chosen career.

Following this, guest speaker Dr Moira O’Brien, founder and president of the Irish Sports Medicine Association and former Chief Medical Officer to the Irish Olympic team (Moscow, LA and Seoul games), was on hand to impart some practical tips and advice.

Each of the scholars was then called up on stage where Michelle and Heather presented them with a personalised jersey.
