Trinity Secondhand Booksale – 23 to 25 February

Posted on: 19 February 2016

The 27th Annual Trinity Secondhand Booksale will be held from 12.00pm on Tuesday 23 February to lunchtime on Thursday 25 February in the Examination Hall, Front Square of Trinity College Dublin.  The event, which features thousands of novels, journals, pamphlets, guides and reference books, is the largest charity booksale in Ireland with books generously donated throughout the year to the Booksale Office by staff, students, alumni and friends of Trinity College Dublin.

As part of the annual Booksale an auction of rare books will take place at 6.00pm on Tuesday 23 February. Admission charge for this night only is €3.

This year there is a large collection of music:  bound scores and sheet music, mostly classical as well as books on music and musicians plus media: records both LP and 78; tapes, videos and DVDs.

Grants to the College Libraries totalling €22,000 were generated by last year’s Booksale and from other specialist sales held during the year.

Following the annual sale the Booksale Committee invites applications for grants for the purchase of books, maps, manuscripts, etc., that will enhance the research resources of the College Libraries. This year most of the funding has been won by the heritage departments of the Library: €15,500 was awarded to the Research Collections Division which includes the Departments of Manuscripts, Early Printed Books, and Maps. Grants were also made for the purchase of research materials in Chinese History, Engineering, Medieval History, History, Geography, English Literature and Languages.

In welcoming the grants, College Librarian Helen Shenton thanked the organisers of the annual booksale for their hard work and described the Booksale as 'a very impressive initiative which has contributed significantly to the acquisitions funding'. The Booksale has raised over €500,000 since it began in 1989.
