Trinity Graduates with High-Tech Skills Continue to be in Demand

The Computing Careers Event held recently in the O’Reilly Institute saw 22 companies from the Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) sector turn out to hire graduates from Trinity’s School of Computer Science and Statistics and other disciplines.  Companies attending emphasised the growing need for graduates with high-tech skills which are not limited solely to the technology industry but are also critical to the efficient running of modern societies, in areas including security, health, education, banking and finance, transportation, communication, and  our interactions through social networks. 

The event was organised by the School of Computer Science and Statistics in collaboration with the College Careers Advisory Service.  Director of Trinity’s Careers Advisory Service, Sean Gannon, said: “The ICT sector has been the only sector to consistently add jobs since the start of the recession”. 

According to the National Skills Bulletin 2012 issued by the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs, the sector employed almost 75,000 people in quarter 4 of 2011, almost 6,000 more than the previous year.  Demand for ICT skills is global.  This year the Computing Careers Event welcomed Brainport Eindhoven Region which is an acknowledgement of the calibre of the students and graduates from the School of Computer Science and Statistics. Brainport Eindhoven Region accounts for a third of all Dutch private R&D expenditure, invests 8% of the GDP on R&D and is one of Europe’s top three regions in terms of patent density.

Professor Jeremy Jones, Head of the School of Computer Science and Statistics welcomed the opportunity for the School to work closely with industry. Highlighting the renewed interest shown by school leavers in Computer Science and associated disciplines. Professor Jones stated: “For the first time in 10 years, all undergraduate courses at the School have exceeded quota, a trend that looks set to continue into the future. Graduates from these courses can look forward to exciting employment opportunities with both indigenous and multinational companies”.

Companies recruiting on the day included: Accenture, Amazon, ASML, Bank of America Merrill Lynch,Bearing Point, Bloomberg, Brainport, Dell, Deloitte, Double Negative Visual Effects, Fidelity, First Derivatives, Google, Guidewire Software, IBM, LM Ericsson, Microsoft, Murex, Paddy Power, SAP , SIG and SQS Software Quality Systems AG.
