Trinity College Remains in top tier of 100 Global Universities in QS Rankings

Posted on: 15 September 2015

Trinity College Dublin remains Ireland’s leading university at the forefront of higher education nationally and globally in the latest QS World University Rankings 2015.  It has been ranked in 78th place, retaining its position in the top tier of 100 universities worldwide in successive years. It sees a slight decrease on last year’s position of 71st place.

In the 2015 ranking, Trinity College has been placed number one university in Ireland by employers, based on the results of an employers’ survey   conducted both nationally and internationally of  Trinity graduates  in the jobs market.

The University’s academic reputation has risen. This is where academics are surveyed across the world for their views and is a further endorsement of Trinity College’s global academic standing.

It increased in the area of international students,   demonstrating   the high calibre of a Trinity education, attracting students  from around the world to study  in Ireland.

Trinity has also increased its position in three subject areas: Engineering and Technology, the Arts and Humanities and in Natural Sciences.

Trinity Dean of Research, Professor John Boland said: “We are delighted that Trinity College Dublin continues to be recognised globally as Ireland’s premier university, competing at the highest international standards.  At the heart of the university is its teaching  and the high scores for subjects areas, and the overall  recognition of our academic staff are a real testament of the quality of a Trinity education for our students.   It is also particularly heartening that employers rate our graduates so highly for the jobs market and their employability both nationally and globally.”

“Notwithstanding these combined achievements the cuts in funding and increased investments made by our global competition, continue to have a direct impact on the rankings. Trinity is battling against intense international competition, particularly from Asian universities and from certain European countries where governments are investing heavily in higher education. The continued reduction in government investment in Irish universities has impacted negatively on the international standing of our universities and our ability to compete in a global arena.”

“Trinity’s top 100 position globally and top 30 in Europe is remarkable in the context of its reduced income. Trinity’s annual budget per academic is 45% lower than that of the average university in the world top 200.  It is to the credit of Trinity’s dedicated teaching and research staff that the University continues to maintain its global position against such challenges.”

“As a knowledge economy we need an excellent competitive education system.  Trinity remains a world leading research-intensive university and the knowledge and innovation created are critical for the economic development of Ireland.”

“With the youngest demographic in Europe, Ireland is ideally placed to make excellent use of its strong tradition of excellence in education to drive the economy.”

“A world class university requires resourcing at internationally competitive levels and for Trinity to sustain its position and increase further worldwide requires sustained investment in the university sector.”
