Trinity College Dublin’s Inaugural Alumni Awards

The CEO of the Office of Fair Trade in the UK, John Fingleton and former CEO of Atlantic Philanthropies, John Healy were among four recipients of Trinity College’s Inaugural Alumni Awards which were presented in Trinity College on Friday, October 19th last. The other awardees included the international developer and
Ireland
‘s former Honorary Consul General in
Singapore
, Dr Stanley Quek, as well as renowned actor Ingrid Craigie. They were presented with the awards in recognition of their achievement in their respective fields and the contribution they have made both in
Ireland
and internationally. This is the first year TCD has organised the Alumni Awards and the awardees for 2007 were selected by a committee chaired by Dr Thomas Mitchell.
About the Awardees:
John Fingleton
As former head of the Irish Competition Authority, John Fingleton tackled key issues such as the Groceries Order, pub licences and pharmacy restrictive practices. Two key changes associated with his period in office were the introduction of major competition-related legalisation, and the creation of bridges between academic research and the implementation of competition policy. In October 2005 he was appointed Chief Executive of the Office of Fair Trading (OFT)

. Under his direction, OFT has been very active and attracted wide media attention to non-competitive practices, especially in the banking and airline industries. He graduated from Trinity with a BA in 1987, where he was a Trinity Scholar and Gold Medallist. He also lectured in TCD Department of Economics for 10-years.
John Healy
John Healy was Chief Executive Officer of The Atlantic Philanthropies (AP), the foundation established by the philanthropist Chuck Feeney, from 2001 to 2007. To date, The Atlantic Philanthropies have made grants worldwide of more than US$4 billion, including US$1 billion to the
island
of
Ireland
. As CEO of AP, he led the initiative to focus the organisation’s grant-making on four areas: ageing, disadvantaged children and youth, population health, and reconciliation and human rights. He was recruited personally by Chuck Feeney in 1990 to manage his work in
Ireland
and went on to manage the whole organisation in 2001. Having also overseen philanthropic outreach to
Vietnam
,
South Africa
,
Australia
,
Ireland
and the
US
, he is today regarded as a leading authority on foundations and philanthropy in general. He graduated from Trinity with a BA in 1972.
Dr Stanley Quek
Dr. Stanley Quek is a former medic and diplomat, developer and designer. Once an eminent family physician in
Singapore
he is now better known for his association with spectacular developments in
Singapore
,
Australia
and the
United Kingdom
. Dr Quek is Executive Chairman of Region Development Pte Ltd, and the Group Managing Director and CEO of Frasers Property in
Australasia
,
UK
and
Europe
. His biggest project at present is Lord Norman Foster’s first high rise residential tower, in
Sydney
. While not practising medicine, Dr. Quek continues to be involved in promoting medical education, particularly in
Ireland
. He has maintained close ties with the
Irish
Universities
and
Medical
Schools
consortium, organising and recruiting appropriately qualified
Singapore
applicants for all the Irish medical schools since the 1980s. He currently sits on the Trinity College School of Medicine Tercentenary Board. He was the
Republic
of
Ireland
‘s Honorary Consul General in
Singapore
serving the Irish communities in
Singapore
,
Brunei
and
Indonesia
in the 1990s before the Irish Embassy was established in May 2000 as a result of significant increases in Irish consular and trade activities. Dr Quek graduated from Trinity with an MB, MA in 1970.
Ingrid Craigie
Ingrid Craigie has had a distinguished theatre career starring in plays staged in
Dublin
,
London
and Broadway. The most recent recipient of The Irish Times Irish Theatre lifetime achievement award, Ingrid is well known for her many appearances in premieres of plays by leading Irish playwrights such as Brian Friel, Thomas Kilroy and Hugh Leonard. With an extensive classical repertoire, Ingrid appeared in Faith Healer and Play recently to critical acclaim. In addition to many TV appearances, including Ballroom of Romance, her film credits include, among others, The Dead, Da, Circle of Friends and A Man of No Importance.As a successful actor, Ingrid has been an exceptional ambassador for
Ireland
and the arts for which this country is world renowned. Ingrid graduated with a BA from TCD in 1976.
