Trinity College Dublin Welcomes the German Chancellor Angela Merkel

Trinity College Dublin welcomed the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, last week (Friday, March 7th, 2014). Chancellor, Angela Merkel, was joined by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, on her visit to Ireland’s leading university where she addressed Trinity students on the topic of ‘Europe in a Globalised World’.
Welcoming Chancellor Merkel, Trinity’s Deputy President, Professor Linda Hogan, said:
“We are delighted to welcome Chancellor Merkel to Trinity College Dublin, Ireland’s leading university which has produced some of the world’s great leaders across the sciences and humanities, including two Nobel Laureates, Samuel Beckett in literature and Ernest Walton in science. At the frontier of research and education, Trinity together with our international collaborators, will continue to tackle the major global challenges of our day, the challenges of ageing, energy and environmental sustainability. As Ireland’s economy recovers we will work with Government to serve societal and economic development needs.”

More than 190 students gathered at the special event hosted by Trinity’s oldest student debating society, the Philosophical Society, to hear the Chancellor’s address. Among those gathered were many of the University’s German students.
Trinity’s Deputy President, Professor Linda Hogan, opened proceedings and Ireland’s Prime Minister, An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, also spoke, following which Chancellor Merkel addressed the students. The discussion was opened to students and there was a question and answer session.
