Trinity Annual Fund Student Awards 2010

Sociology and Psychology student, Darren Allen, and English Literature and Classical Civilisation student, David Adamson, were announced as the overall winners of the 2010 Trinity Annual Fund Student Awards.  The winners, chosen from a shortlist of five finalists, were recognised for their achievements at a ceremony in TCD this week (8th April).  The other finalists were Orlaith Foley, Conall Fitzgerald and David Kearney.

The purpose of the awards is to recognise students who have made an outstanding contribution to Trinity life in the past year through contributing to sports clubs, societies and other areas of College life.   Speaking at the event John Dillon, Alumni Director said: “It never ceases to amaze me how students commit themselves to improving the College experience for others.  These awards are a great way of recognising these students and their contributions each year.  All five finalists have set an excellent example not only to their peers but to the entire College community.”

Since his first year in College Darren Allen has acted as a Trinity Access Programmes Ambassador, volunteering and speaking at events and taking part in the TAP shadowing days.  He is also heavily involved in the Dublin University Judo Club and has competed at inter-varsity level, acted as a coach to other club members and has served in the position of Public Relations Officer, Safety Officer and is currently Vice-Captain of the Club.  Darren has also started volunteering as a lab assistant in the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience.

David Adamson has been centrally involved in the Central Societies Committee in College and has acted as Secretary alongside working on many of the committee’s campaigns including the launch of the website www.trinitysocieties.ie and providing officer training sessions to different societies.  David has also been instrumental in organising the Philosophical Society’s re-enactment of the Trials of Oscar Wilde for two years now, an initiative which won the ‘Best Event’ award at the 2009 National Student Awards.

Orlaith Foley may be best known for her time spent as Welfare Officer for the Students Union in 2008/09.  She is an active member of the College community and this year she has acted as a Mentor for the Scéim Cónaithe on campus in conjunction with Oifig na Gaeilge.  For the past number of years Orlaith has been involved in the College Mentor Programme which following recent success will be rolled out to TSM students for the next academic year.

As a medical student, Conall Fitzgerald has taken part in the Medical Overseas Voluntary Electives and continues to encourage other students to do the same. This year he represented Trinity at the Spike Milligan Public Speaking Competition organised by the Irish College of Psychiatrists and he is a member of the Medical School’s Tercentenary Planning Committee for its 300th Anniversary celebrations next year.  He has also acted as Chairperson for the TCD Biological Association (Medical Society) organising a range of social, cultural and academic events throughout the year for students of the Medical School.

David Kearney has been involved in multiple aspects of college life as a member of numerous societies, a campaign team member of the SU elections, travel editor for the University Record and much more.  This year David acted as Chairperson for two of the student societies, the International Students Society and the Geographical Society, and secretary for the DU Choral Society.  David is committed to enhancing the student experience by taking part in College dialogue to develop and promote the College experience.

The Trinity Annual Fund is supported by Trinity Alumni who contribute financially to Trinity College for the purpose of supporting grassroots projects and initiatives that enhance the Trinity experience.
