Trinity Access Programmes’ Shadowing Day

Posted on: 04 February 2007

Trinity Access Programmes (TAP) held its seventh annual Shadowing Day Programme this week, an event sponsored  for the first time this year by NCB Stockbrokers.

The secondary pupils involved in Shadowing Day are paired with current TCD undergraduates studying courses in which the young pupils are interested in pursuing at third level. College hosted 160 fifth year pupils attending schools which are linked to TCD through TAP and 127 TCD undergraduate students volunteered to be “shadowed” for a day.

Shadowing Day aims to give pupils from socio-economic groups currently underrepresented in the third level sector, the unique opportunity to experience firsthand, the physical, academic, cultural and social aspects of student life in Trinity College. The most popular course choices amongst fifth year pupils this year were BESS, Law, Medicine, Nursing and Physiotherapy.

The Shadowing Day Programme has been rated by participating pupils as one of the most successful, beneficial and ultimately life-changing programmes offered by TAP in second level schools.  It helps participants gain a hands-on understanding of Trinity College and aids them in making informed decisions regarding options for third level study.
