Thousands of Books Go On Sale at the Trinity Secondhand Booksale

The 23rd Annual Trinity Secondhand Booksale will commence at 5.30pm on Thursday March 8th in the Examination Hall, Front Square of Trinity College Dublin. The event, which features thousands of novels, journals, pamphlets, guides and reference books, is the largest charity booksale in Ireland with books generously donated throughout the year to the Booksale Office by staff, students, alumni and friends of Trinity College Dublin.
As part of the annual Booksale an auction of rare books will take place at 7.00pm with a viewing of auction lots in the Precentors Room, East Chapel, on Thursday March 8th between 11am-3pm. Auction lots will also be available to view before the auction in the Examination Hall. Admission charge for this night only is €3.
Amongst the 80 lots that are due to go under the hammer are three volumes of The works of William Carleton, a Post Office Dublin Directory for 1912; Dalton’s History of the Archdiocese of Tuam (1928); two James Stephen’s first editions of The Insurrection in Dublin (1916) and Irish fairy tales (1920); Report on the electrification of the Irish Free State (1925); With the Irish in Frongoch by W.J. Brennan-Whitmore (1917); a Burke’s landed gentry of Ireland (1912), J.P. Mahaffy; The plate in Trinity College Dublin (1918), and a 1890 copy of General Booth’s In darkest England and the way out. The Sale continues on ‘Restocked Friday’, 10.00am-6.00pm (admission free), when even more material will be on sale, and on ‘Half Price Saturday’ 10.00am-2.00pm when there will be a clearance auction of all remaining books.
The annual Trinity Secondhand Booksale is organised and run by both student and staff volunteers. All proceeds from the Booksale go to support the purchase of books and research materials in the College libraries. Books are collected year-round at the Booksale Office, Goldsmith Hall, Pearse Street.
