Students raise over €34,000 for Trinity charities and Hardship Fund

Students gathered, once again, earlier this year to do their bit for Trinity and those less fortunate than themselves. Some 2,000 students contributed to RAG Week 2018 and the Science Ball to raise a total of €34,070 for student charities and the hardship fund. This is Trinity’s most successful RAG Week to date.
The annual RAG (Raise & Give) Week raises support several worthy Trinity charities. A series of events were held during RAG week, ranging from A massive Table Quiz, Rose of Trinity, Trinity Come Dancing, Line of Coins and the Trinity Rumble event while The Science Ball in March was enjoyed by over 500 students, with all profits going towards the hardship fund.
Trinity’s alumni also provided support to RAG Week and the Science Ball, via a challenge grant of €12,000 matched funding. This provided a big boost to the total raised as well as recognition of the students’ fundraising efforts.
Speaking about the significance of the contribution, the Senior Tutor, Dr Aidan Seery said “We are delighted to have the support of students and alumni towards the hardship fund and this will go some way to addressing this growing need.”
The SU President, Kevin Keane added “The spirit of charity, community and support of others is alive and well within the Trinity community. The number of students supporting RAG Week and Science Ball is increasing each year, which demonstrates a real desire to support the noble work of each the College charities involved”
The aim of RAG Week is to raise awareness and donations for several worthy College charities, in support of student education and engagement with society. There are seven partner charities based in Trinity. Combined they have hundreds of weekly volunteers helping Trinity students, children and families from disadvantaged communities, as well as special projects abroad.
Funds raised from this year’s RAG Week will go towards the following College charities: Voluntary Tuition Programme (VTP), Trinity Vincent de Paul Society (VDP), Student to Student (S2S), Student Hardship Fund, Medical Overseas Voluntary Elective (MOVE), Free Legal Aid Advice Centre (FLAC), and Amnesty Society.
