Rugby’s Silvester is Sports Person of Year

Ireland U20s and DUFC (Trinity Rugby) full-back Michael Silvester has been named as the Sports Person of the Year at the annual Trinity Sport Awards.

The ceremony, compered once again by RTE’s Evanne Ní Chuilinn, took place in Clontarf Castle for the first time. Special guests included Leinster and Ireland rugby players Rob Kearney and Robbie Henshaw who brought the Champions Cup with them.

A number of new categories of awards were introduced this year, including Alumni of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Sports Member of the Year.

The full list of winners as follows:

  • Team of the Year – DUBC (men’s rowing) Senior 8  
  • Club of the Year – DU Harriers  
  • Coach of the Year – Shane O’Brien (hurling)  
  • Performance of the Year – Siobhan Scarlett (rifle)
  • Social Media Campaign of the Year – Hurling  
  • Club Alumnae of the Year – Laura Brennan (DU Harriers)
  • Club Administrator of the Year – Sorcha O’Carolan Murphy (ladies cricket) 
  • Sports Person of the Year – Michael Silvester (rugby)
  • Volunteer of the year – Mar Aguilar Lopez
  • Sports Member of the Year – Neasa Corkery

In addition, a presentation of 18 Pinks took place, with female recipients receiving their traditional scarf and male recipients a tie.

Speaking about the event Head of Sport Michelle Tanner commented: “The annual Sports Awards have grown to be an excellent event recognising the brilliance of our sporting students and members, not just those who won awards but to all who made an effort to perform, get fit, participate or volunteer. We have successfully managed to ‘Raise our Game’, with the support of the university, colleagues and our sponsors, most notably the Bank of Ireland.”
