Record Number of Students Attend TAP’s Pre University Orientation Programme

Posted on: 17 September 2010

A record number of 126 incoming first year students from Trinity Access Programmes (TAP) link secondary schools took part in the annual TAP Pre University Orientation Programme which commenced on Monday September 13th last.  TAP aims to engage pupils from under-represented socio-economic groups in third level education and this year marks the highest number of young adults progressing to university, up 31% on last year.

The orientation programme, run in association with Accenture, aims to introduce students, entering via TAP’s one year Foundation Courses and the Higher Education Access Rout (HEAR), to all aspects of student life at Trinity College.  The students, many of whom are the first in their families to progress to higher education, will attend study skills and essay writing sessions, sporting and social activities and information sessions.  During the programme, members of the College community work together to ensure that the incoming students receive an understanding of the broad range of social and academic interests available in TCD.

A reception, hosted by TAP to mark the Pre University Orientation Programme, took place on September 16th where students were addressed by Senior Tutor Claire Laudet.  Managing Director of Accenture Ireland, Mark Ryan, also addressed the group about the skills required in third level and beyond.  More information on TAP initiatives can be found via the website.
