New student mobile app, Trinity Live, is launched

Posted on: 12 February 2019

Trinity Live, a new student mobile app designed and developed by students was launched by the Provost, Dr Patrick Prendergast today. The app will allow students to stay connected with college through their smartphones by providing a simple way for Trinity students to access their timetables, exam results, emergency notifications, digital identification, and find college locations among other functions.

Designed by four Computer Science students, Seamus Dwyer, Caolan Melvin, Mark Noone and Michael McAndrew, who acted as interns last summer in IT Services, Trinity Live was developed under the supervision of Dr Darach Golden. The initiative emanated from the Provost’s Council.

Speaking about the significance of the mobile app, Dr Geoff Bradley, Head of Academic Services, Innovation & Digital Platforms, IT Services who oversees the Trinity Live initiative said: “We listened to student feedback to understand how they want to engage with services and they wanted a single app to do this”.

“This app builds on the success of a Trinity Digital ID app launched in 2015 that was later commercialised as an early student entrepreneurial effort. While that app was popular and innovative, it needed to be redeveloped or replaced to keep pace with smartphone changes. We are looking to secure funding for the summer of 2019 to take on a new group of interns to further develop the Trinity Live app and to build functionality for Trinity alumni,” Dr Bradley continued.

In commending the students and IT Services on the development of Trinity Live, Provost Prendergast noted how this app is a concrete example of student innovation in action which will benefit the entire student community.
