Posted on: 03 February 2011

Diabetes experts from all over the world gathered to discuss the development of new and effective strategies for treating and preventing the condition at a conference, Innovation in Diabetes, recently in Dublin.  The conference was organised by former TCD Professor John Nolan in association with Trinity College’s School of Medicine as part of the programme of events marking the School’s Tercentenary of its foundation in 1711.

Fourteen leading international experts joined Irish clinicians to discuss the latest developments in diabetes treatments.  The conference’s keynote speaker, Professor of Medicine at the University of California at San Diego, Dr Steven Edelman, an advocate of self-care, spoke about the benefits of teaching and motivating patients.  Other international experts included Professor Zhangrong Xu of China and Dr Shailaja Kale of India, who spoke about the diabetes pandemic that is currently affecting both of their countries and addressed some new approaches to dealing with the condition.

Over the course of the two day conference a range of interactive workshops were also held where members of the public and diabetes patients were invited to discover the latest developments in diabetes care that have practical benefits for people with diabetes.  Professor Nolan, who chaired the conference, is a former Professor of Endocrinology at Trinity College Dublin and St James’s Hospital, and has recently taken up a new position as CEO and Head of the world renowned Steno Diabetes Centre in Denmark.
