Innovative masters programme on sustainability launched

New leaders for a new world

A new international Master’s in Global Challenges for Sustainability accredited jointly by five leading universities of the CHARM-EU Alliance – Trinity College Dublin, University of Barcelona, University of Montpellier, Utrecht University and Eötvös Loránd University Budapest – has been launched.

Starting in September 2021, this 18-month transdisciplinary, challenge-based programme is suitable for students from all undergraduate disciplinary backgrounds, with opportunities to study at multiple campuses across the Alliance.

Student will have the opportunity to:

  • develop creative and critical thinking skills
  • research and evaluate complex societal challenges from different stakeholder and intercultural perspectives
  • assess and integrate different disciplinary and transdisciplinary knowledge and research methodologies
  • acquire expertise and communicate effectively on ‘real-life’ and complex issues
  • acquire advanced transversal competencies in problem solving, entrepreneurialism, innovation, digital skills and a life-long learning disposition.

There are three compulsory phases: the preparatory phase module will be featuring general capacities related to sustainability, social innovation and transdisciplinary research; the second phase of the master’s degree will be flexible, allowing students to choose on one of three sustainability themes: Water, Food or Life & Health; and in the third phase students will be required to do a capstone project on a sustainability challenge in collaboration with extra academic actors (i.e. business, community and society).

This masters proramme will prepares students for a range of professional areas aligned to industry, business and civil society needs. Examples of possible career opportunities include: sustainability specialist; communications specialist; social innovation analyst; sustainable entrepreneur; project manager; international consultant; researcher; and academic positions.
