Douglas Hyde Gallery appoints new director

Posted on: 01 August 2017

Georgina Jackson has been appointed as the new director of the Douglas Hyde Gallery. A History of Art graduate from Trinity, Georgina comes to the Douglas Hyde Gallery from Mercer Union, Toronto, where she has been Director of Exhibitions & Programmes since 2013. During this time she led the organisation towards a renewed focus on the commissioning of work by emerging and established contemporary artists, while elevating its reputation within the local, national and international art world.

Taking up her new post at the end of May, the first solo exhibitions by artists Isabel Nolan and Brendan Earley under Georgina’s directorship have just opened. Isabel Nolan’s exhibition ‘Calling on Gravity’ is on view in Gallery 1 while Brendan Earley’s exhibition ‘back of beyond’ is on view in Gallery 2 and the Freeman Library.

Georgina brings to the Douglas Hyde her exciting experience and research, and has taken over from John Hutchinson who was director for 25 years.

Speaking at the exhibition opening, the Provost, Dr Patrick Prendergast said: “In this, her opening two exhibitions, Georgina has worked within the tradition of the Douglas Hyde, while bringing her own unique perspective. With Isabel Nolan and Brendan Earley, she brings to the Gallery two wonderful Irish artists. These works are fresh and vivid (and strange) in the best sense of the word. I’m no art critic and nor have I spent enough time with the works to come to any definitive conclusion on them – but, like I am sure the rest of you, I have enormous pleasure in looking and feeling and reacting to these works, and I’m really delighted that they’ll be here until end September”.

The Douglas Hyde Gallery is open on the following times:

Monday – Friday, 11am – 6pm
Thursday, 11am – 7pm
Saturday, 11am – 5:30pm
Closed Sundays and Bank Holidays
