Department of Germanic Studies awarded Gold Medal

Posted on: 22 June 2007

At the annual summer ball of the German-Irish Chamber of Commerce in June, the Chamber’s Gold Medal was presented to the Department of Germanic Studies, Trinity College Dublin. This medal is awarded annually and is chosen by the members of the Kuratorium of the Chamber, namely the Ambassador to Ireland, H.E Christian Pauls, Ralf Lissek (CEO, German-Irish Chamber), Frank A. Keane (Frank Keane Holdings Ltd.), Anthony Mackey (Irish Dairy Board) , Brian Sweeney (Siemens Ltd.) and Jack Golden (CRH Ltd.).

The medal marks an outstanding contribution to the promotion of German language and culture in Ireland and internationally. The Department’s teaching, research, careers liaison and links with the business community all played a role in the award, as did for example its acquisition of the European Language Label in 2005 for participation in a pioneering project on transferable skills in third level language curricula. On behalf of the Department, Dr Gillian Martin accepted the prize from Jack Golden of CRH plc.
