6th Annual Trinity Med Day

Posted on: 02 November 2007

Over 500 medical and nursing students from Trinity College took to the streets of Dublin today (2 November) to raise money for the sixth annual TCD Med Day, a citywide event which aims to raise money and public awareness for facilities in Dublin Hospitals.

This year the proceeds will be donated to the High-Risk Breast Cancer Clinic in the Adelaide and Meath Hospital, incorporating the National Children’s Hospital, an essential service for young women at increased risk of familial breast cancer for whom the national screening service does not apply.  In addition, Med Day has pledged its support to the Trinity Access Programme to fund a medical scholarship, helping students from disadvantaged areas, and has also promised €20,000 to the Intensive Care Unit in St James’s Hospital, for a much-needed family waiting room.

Books will be closed and stethoscopes laid down as over 500 white coats and scrubs take to the streets from 7 am in the morning seeking donations and support from the public. The Trinity Campus will be alive with activity, as students take part in a frantic sports day, followed by a slave auction at the Pavilion bar hosted by the comedian Dave McSavage. The evening line-up of events includes a comedy show, followed by a night out in Temple Bar’s newest hotspot The Purty Kitchen and Club.

This year’s patron is Miss Ireland 2007, Blathnaid McKenna, who has pledged her support for the event.  Last year Trinity Med Day raised over €90,000, for the benefit of neonatal care in the Coombe and Rotunda hospitals.
