Trinity celebrates new Scholars and Fellows
Posted on: 20 April 2026
Trinity College Dublin today celebrated a new cohort of Fellows and Scholars as Trinity Monday’s annual highlight took centre stage in Front Square.
Provost Dr Linda Doyle, following the tradition, stood on the steps of the Public Theatre at 10 am to read out their names.
In total, there are 89 new Scholars this year, 22 new Fellows, seven new Professorial Fellows and two Honorary Fellows.
Previous Scholars at Trinity include former President Dr Mary Robinson, award-winning director Lenny Abrahamson and acclaimed writer Samuel Beckett.
Provost of Trinity College Dublin, Dr Linda Doyle, said: “I offer my warmest congratulations to everyone who has been elected to Fellowship and Scholarship. Today, we celebrate your fantastic academic achievement.”
“Trinity Monday is always a joyful day in the College’s calendar, and the warmth with which it is celebrated is something we should all be very proud of.”
“With that in mind, I want to commend every student who took on the challenge of sitting the ‘Schols’ exams and every member of our academic staff who put their name forward for Fellowship. Your commitment and courage is inspiring.”
“Go n-éirí libh go léir!”
This year’s Scholars come from a broad range of disciplines, including Law, Engineering, Medicine, Computer Science, Music Education and Nursing. Each Scholar is entitled to a range of benefits for up to five years, including free accommodation on campus.
Emma Wilson, Law and History (TJH), gives a double thumbs-up after being announced as a new Scholar.
Becoming a Trinity Scholar is a major achievement for which second year students must perform exceptionally well in exams held in January, showing deep knowledge of their subjects. The students continue with their usual course work as well as studying independently for these exams.
