Posted on: 08 July 2010

The Journal of Postgraduate Research which was recently launched in TCD (July 5th) saw Celia Grace Kenny, a postgraduate student in Trinity’s Irish School of Ecumenics (ISE), take the award for ‘Best Paper’ for her submission, ‘Private Parts in Public Spaces: A Feminist Ethic of Embodiment’, a feminist, poststructuralist analysis of Western beauty practices.  The Journal, which is published annually by the Graduates’ Students Union (GSU), aims to showcase the breadth of Trinity College’s research talent.

Celia Grace Kenny receives her prize from Provost, Dr John Hegarty.

The theme of this year’s Journal was ‘Sustainable Society’, chosen to tie in with Trinity’s current strategic research theme.  At the launch event Dr Stephen Woolcock from the London School of Economics delivered a talk on ‘Factors Shaping EU External Economic Policy’, which focused on the role of the EU in directing trade, financial and environmental developments around the world.

Other finalists on the evening included Florens Impens of the School of English for her submission ‘Ovid in County Clare’, and Hannah Paul of Trinity’s ISE, for her submission ‘International Criminal Courts as an Architect of Sustainable Peace in Post-Conflict Society’.  The three finalists were chosen from the eleven papers selected for publication and cover the disciplines of Ecumenics, English, Law, Climatology, Classics, Gender Studies, Health and Computer Science.

The Journal of Postgraduate Research is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal which is authored, reviewed and edited by postgraduate students.  Each year the author of the ‘Best Paper’ is presented with a cheque for €500.  2010 marks the 25th year the GSU has published a peer-reviewed postgraduate journal which began in 1985 with the publication of Alumnus.  In 2001 the name was changed to the Journal of Postgraduate Research and it is supported by the Alumni Annual Fund, the Dean of Graduate Studies and the Provost.
