Trinity College Dublin has unveiled “Thrive”, its strategic plan for the next five years (2025-2030), outlining its ambition to provide, and fiercely defend, a high-quality pluralist university education. The plan says that this will be underpinned by research rooted in academic freedom, enriched by diverse backgrounds and perspectives, and marked by critical thinking.

Visit the dedicated Strategic Plan website

The strategic plan is organised around three pillars - Purpose, People and Place - and makes six headline commitments, measured against 24 intended outcomes.

Sustainability is knitted into all six commitments in the strategic plan, reflecting the centrality of climate action and biodiversity loss in the life of the university. It points to the more than 400 Trinity researchers currently working on climate and biodiversity issues, in addition to the efforts of many staff dedicated to sustainability.

Key elements of the plan include:

  • Intensifying Trinity’s research and innovation along with a strengthening of international networks of collaborators
  • Developing new models for the university’s approach to teaching and learning, adapting to changing student needs, including the opportunities of lifelong learning
  • Delivering Trinity’s first Student Centre over the lifetime of the plan
  • Opening the first digital-only library at the Trinity East campus
  • Transforming the place of sport in the university
  • Extending our access programmes for learners from under-represented backgrounds.
  • Undertaking an ambitious programme of retrofit and refurbishment across a range of capital projects, including the Old Library Redevelopment Project.
  • Intensifying enterprise impacts through a new innovation hub, Portal
  • A considered and critical AI education and learning environment.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless, launched the strategy at an event in Trinity today, saying: “I am delighted to launch Trinity College Dublin’s new strategic plan, and acknowledge its commitment as an institution to ‘challenge and serve society’. This forward-looking plan, which rightly places sustainability at its core, reflects Trinity’s ambition to strengthen its capacity to confront the challenges that the next five years will bring in higher education, research and society, and its determination to make the most of the opportunities.”

Dr Linda Doyle, Provost of Trinity, said : “I want to thank everyone who was involved in the creation of our new strategic plan, from those who attended the first consultation sessions to those who curated its development. It truly reflects a broad span of engagement and discussion.

“I want Trinity to be a place where each one of us can thrive - both professionally and personally. When we thrive, Trinity thrives. And when Trinity thrives, we are able to challenge and serve society more effectively, and make positive and lasting change in the world. I believe this plan provides the blueprint to achieve this in the years ahead.”
