Trinity’s technology transfer team wins Industry Engagement Impact Award

Experts from Trinity’s Technology Transfer Office have won the 2020 Knowledge Transfer Ireland (KTI) Industry Engagement Impact Award for their work in nurturing the prolific collaboration between researchers from AMBER, the SFI Research Centre for Advanced Materials and Bio-Engineering Research, headquartered at Trinity, and Intel.
Intel Ireland was a founding research partner of CRANN, the Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices, in 2008, and has continued its enduring research relationship with Trinity, UCC/Tyndall and DCU through a highly successful collaborative research programme with AMBER, since 2013.
Building on this success with AMBER 1, Trinity and Intel recently put in place a new collaborative research agreement for AMBER 2, to ensure the relationship can continue for the next five years.
Dr Graham McMullin, Technology Case Transfer Manager at Trinity Research & Innovation, said:
“We are delighted to have won this year’s KTI Industry Engagement Impact Award, which reflects the importance of the successful conclusion to the AMBER 2 collaborative research agreement with Intel, which remains a major strategic industry partner until 2025 and immediately protects company funding for two projects that might otherwise have been lost overseas.
“Furthermore, the clear agreed models for IP management within the agreement will assist the company in securing further potential Intel R&D funding and will mean that continued world-class fundamental collaborative research within Ireland can take place here at Trinity and AMBER.”
Trinity has a long-standing innovation partnership with Intel. The partnership has led to around 50 scientific publications since 2008 and has seen Intel fund 15 research projects with AMBER worth approximately €1.9 million, with an additional €3.7 million in in-kind contribution.
Intel also embeds several employees in AMBER institutions, who contribute to the collaborative research. Additionally, In the last 10 years Intel has hired numerous post-graduate and post-doctorate researchers from AMBER.
Four AMBER researchers have won the prestigious Intel Outstanding Researcher Award in this time period, the most recent being Professor John Boland from AMBER and Trinity’s School of Chemistry in 2018.
The 2020 KTI Awards were presented by Dr Alison Campbell OBE, Director of Knowledge Transfer Ireland in an on-line event.
