Lorcan Clarke, President of the University Philosophical Society was awarded Best Individual at the recent Board of Irish College Society (BICS) awards.
The annual BICS awards recognise excellence in student societies across Ireland and this year’s competition saw 17 third level institutes from around the country compete in categories such as Best Individual, Best Society, Best Fresher, Best Event, Best New Society, Most Improved and Best Online Presence.

The Philosophical Society had a very successful year, reaching many historic milestones including signing up a record 3,248 new members, a record number of events, and attracting more attendees of events than any previous year. As President, Lorcan’s main role was to oversee the strategic direction of the society, coordinate the 21 members of council and invite the headline guests and organise their visits. This year, 22 guests were secured to address the society, including Hugh Laurie, Richard Dawkins, Whoopi Goldberg, Conan O’ Brien, Sir Steve Redgrave and the Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt.
Lorcan had been nominated for the award by his peers in The Phil, who felt that he had led the society this year in an exemplary way, and was largely responsible for the great success of the 2012-13 Session.
