Posted on: 21 April 2021

Trinity College Dublin has been named 6th best university in the world in terms of Gender Equality and ranks in the top 50 in 7 total categories in the 2021 University Impact Rankings from Times Higher Education (THE). Trinity is ranked in the top 100 in 11 categories.

The THE University Impact Rankings are the first to use metrics to evaluate the degree to which universities have a positive social and economic impact on the planet, with each category in the rankings linked to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In individual categories, Trinity’s top three places were: 6th in the world on delivering Gender Equality, 26th in the field of Responsible Consumption and Production and 38th in Sustainable Cities and Communities.

From the Office of the Dean of Research:

Trinity is committed to improving sustainability and equality of opportunity across the University. We are pleased to see our commitment recognised in these impact rankings and will continue to work hard to be a positive force in our local and global communities.

-Trinity’s Associate Deans of Research Prof Andrew Bowie and Prof Lorraine Leeson

The University Impact Rankings measured 1,240 institutions this year, up from 766 in 2020, on their commitment to supporting Sustainable Development Goals through teaching, research, and knowledge transfer. The study also sought to measure how the institutions embody the goals in internal practices, policies, and procedures.

Trinity’s Sustainability Advisor, Michele Hallahan, adds:

Trinity is delighted to see so many Irish universities participating in the THE SDG rankings this year. We are currently working on Trinity’s first Climate Action Plan and on setting sustainability goals for the next 5 years, which will lower the carbon footprint of the university and see sustainability and the SDGs embedded in many more curricula for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. We hope to see this work reflected in our rankings in the coming years.
