Trinity College’s Irish School of Ecumenics (ISE) recently hosted an event to celebrate the global observance of 800 years of Mongolian statehood, a United Nations endorsed initiative which the ISE innovatively presented as a celebration of student diversity.

Opening the event, ISE director, Professor Linda Hogan, said she was delighted that the ISE could host such an important UN activity and that the occasion was a reminder of the remarkable diversity of the ISE student body.

The United Nations Higher Commissioner for Refugees  Representative to Ireland,  Mr Manuel Jordao, also gave a speech  on the UN’s humanitarian role and  its work with refugees and the displaced. Mr Jordao praised ISE in the educational opportunities it offers students to re-shape their lives and to conquer the adversity of political violence and natural disaster.

The Irish UN Council envoy, Mr John McGarry, who was also present at the event formally noted the UN General Assembly Resolution to mark the 800 years of Mongolian statehood and praised its message of tolerance and diversity.

Following the speeches, the Mongolian Consul to Ireland, Mr Earnest Crossen, invited those in attendance to sample some  Mongolian music and celebrations.
