Samuel Beckett Award 2008

The Annual TCD Samuel Beckett Studentship Award for 2008 was recently awarded to drama student Joshua Edelman. Joshua’s winning research project is a sociological analysis of the contemporary Irish theatrical field over the last 25 years which he is conducting in collaboration with the Project on European Theatre Systems (STEP).

The TCD Visual and Performing Arts Fund present this award for artistic creativity to honour one of Trinity’s most famous graduates, Samuel Beckett, the Nobel laureate writer, playwright, and director.

Submissions for the competition are accepted from any area in the visual or performing arts including cinema, dance, music, new media, photography, theatre and other types of performance, video and visual art. The judging panel look for a high degree of creativity, imagination and vision, as well as evidence that the research can be successfully accomplished.  Winners of the awards make a public presentation of their work by means of publication, public lecture or performance.

Valued at €10,000, the award is funded by the Department of Arts, Sport & Tourism and the TCD Visual and Performing Arts Fund, and is designed to cover the costs of tuition and accommodation. Previous winners of the award include Nicholas Johnson (2006) and Jackie Blackman (2007).
