International Brain Awareness Week at TCD

A series of public lectures on how the brain functions are being held in Trinity College Dublin to mark International Brain Awareness Week : March 12th-16th 2007.

The purpose of the week is to promote awareness of how our brains work and to highlight ongoing Irish research into conditions and diseases that affect the brain.

Public lectures, which will take place on the evenings of 13th, 14th and 15th of March 2007 are being organised by the Neurological Alliance of Ireland (NAI) in association with Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience (TCIN). The series of public lectures was launched by the Vice Provost, Professor Ruth Byrne, who said: “understanding the brain and the complexities of brain impairments, is one of the most serious challenges facing modern society.”

A number of high profile speakers from the Institute will take part, including Professor Ian Robertson, author of a number of popular science books including Mind Sculptor, The Mind’s Eye  and Stay Sharp.

The schedule also includes eminent Irish experts from the fields of neurology, psychology, psychiatry and geriatrics namely:
Dr. Orla Hardiman, Director of Neurology, Beaumont Hospital,
Professor Des O’Neill, Consultant Geriatrician, Tallaght Hospital,
Professor RoseAnne Kenny, Consultant Geriatrician, St. James’s Hospital, and Professor Brian Lawlor, Consultant Psychiatrist, St. James’s Hospital and St. Patrick’s Hospital.

According to the Director of the Trinity College Institute for Neuroscience, Professor Marina Lynch, “These lectures aim to bring exciting developments in brain research to the general public. We look forward to showcasing the work of the Institute”.
