College Arrangements – President Obama’s visit to Dublin

Posted on: 20 May 2011

Below are the College arrangements surrounding President Obama’s visit to Dublin on Monday 23 May 2011.

Update 23 May at 12 noon – Please note road closures update in Section 7 below.

Apart from vehicles associated with the visit of President Obama, there will be no vehicular access to Front Square from midday on Sunday 22 May to the start of business on Tuesday 24 May.

Front Square will also be closed to the general public from 9.00am to midnight on Monday 23 May. Staff and students accessing buildings/offices located on Front Square may be required to present their College ID card.

The security arrangements for the open air celebration in College Green on the evening of 23 May will require some College buildings in the vicinity of College Green to close for normal business for some periods and the College regrets the inconvenience this will cause to the academic and administrative areas located there and the individual retired staff and students working in these areas.

1. Off-campus buildings

There will be no access to 3-4 Foster Place and 1-3-5 College Green from 9.00am on Sunday 22 May 2011 until normal opening hours on Tuesday 24 May. The following academic and administrative areas will be affected by the closures:

  • Careers Advisory Service (College Green)
  • Children’s Research Centre
  • Innovation Academy
  • National Institute for Intellectual Disability
  • School of Social Work and Social Policy (College Green)
  • Treasurer’s Office

2. Buildings on the College campus

There will be no access to offices and facilities in Houses 4, 5, 6, 7 and Regent House in Front Square from 8.00am on Monday 23 May 2011 until normal opening hours on Tuesday 24 May.  The following academic and administrative areas will be affected by the closures:

  • Admissions Office
  • Proctors’ Office
  • School of Music (House 5)
  • Staff Office
  • Student Records Office
  • Students’ Unions’ and Shop

Given the limited time given to us it will not be possible to provide a relocation service to those offices and areas affected by the closure.  Managers have been asked to make whatever arrangements are possible and to put contact notices on their websites for urgent enquiries.

3. Access to College campus

Front Gate – closed from 1800 hrs Sunday 22 May until midnight Monday 23 May.

Nassau Street Gate – open from 1800 hrs Sunday 22 May until midnight Monday 23 May – midnight Sunday 22 May to 0700 hours on Monday 23 May for residents only.

Lincoln Place Gate – open from 0500 hrs until midnight Monday 23 May.

All other gates – normal arrangements will apply.

4. Residents

Because of the security restrictions in the College Green area over the week-end access for residents will be via Nassau Street from 1800 hrs Sunday 22 May until midnight Monday 23 May.

The Accommodation Office is issuing a separate email to residents which will clarify other arrangements impacting on residents in the Front Square area of College.

5. Examinations

In anticipation of a possible disruption to College services during the period of President Obama’s visit all examinations scheduled to take place in Regent House, the Exam Hall and the GMB on Saturday 21 May and Monday 23 May have been relocated. For details of new venues please consult the examination timetable webpage (http://www.tcd.ie/vpcao/administration/examinations/examination-timetables.php)

If urgent examination meetings are scheduled to take place in any of the above locations on Monday 23 May, you are invited to contact Colm Gayton in the Director Buildings Office (colm.gayton@tcd.ie) who will do his best to provide an alternative location for your meeting.

6. General

There may be other activities on the campus associated with the College Green event during the day on Monday 23 May but this is not expected to impact on activities in College apart from the restrictions outlined above.

7. City Traffic

Staff and students are advised that there will be traffic restrictions in place on Sunday 22 May and Monday 23 May in the city centre in particular. Details will be available in the media.

For those people driving on/off campus on Monday 23 May, please note that from 11.15hrs – 14.30hrs and from 16.30hrs – 21.00hrs road closures will be put in place on Pearse Street and Lincoln Place.
