The President and First Lady of Lithuania visited Trinity on Thursday to view the Book of Kells and other precious objects in Trinity’s collections.

Welcomed by Provost Dr Linda Doyle, President Gitanas Nausėda and First Lady Diana Nausėdienė took a tour of the Old Library, guided by Librarian and College Archivist, Helen Shenton. Among the items on display was the incomparable Book of Kells, widely considered to be Ireland’s greatest cultural treasure. Made of vellum, the Book of Kells is a 9th century manuscript decorated with intricate lettering, vivid depictions of plants and animals, and elaborate Celtic motifs.

Also on display was the Brian Boru harp, an original copy of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, and a number of Brehon Law manuscripts.
