Trinity becomes 3rd university awarded NTA's gold-level Smarter Travel Mark

After its investment in campus infrastructure, promoting behaviour change initiatives and advocating for better walking, cycling and public transport provision, Trinity is proud to be recognised as a leader in smart, sustainable travel.

Trinity College Dublin has been awarded a gold-level Smarter Travel Mark from the National Transport Authority (NTA) for its efforts to support active and sustainable travel to and from its campuses. Trinity is now one of three universities in Ireland to achieve the gold-level award.

The Smarter Travel Mark is a three-tier certification that recognises and celebrates organisations that are working to reduce single-person car usage, and gold certification is awarded to those that have put in place “outstanding measures that support sustainable and active commuting”.

Provost Dr Linda Doyle and Vice President for Biodiversity and Climate Action Professor Jane Stout were presented with the plaque by Hugh Creegan, Interim CEO of the National Transport Authority of Ireland at an event on campus attended by staff, students and members of the Smarter Travel Committee.

‘It is a real honour to receive this award as it acknowledges our commitment to promoting and supporting sustainable and active travel choices to our students and staff between all our campus locations. The award reflects the hard work and dedication of our Healthy Trinity and Sustainability Teams, our Estates and Facilities staff, and our Smarter Travel Committee and others in promoting the benefits of sustainable travel,” said Professor Stout.

‘This award is also a testament to the collective efforts of our staff and students who choose more sustainable ways of commuting every day. Together, we are reducing our carbon emissions, improving our health and well-being, and making our campus a cleaner, calmer, more connected place to learn and work, and we look forward to continuing to implement further Smarter Travel initiatives across all our campuses.’

Hugh Creegan, Interim CEO of NTA, emphasised the importance of the mark, stating:

“We are delighted to award Trinity College Dublin the Smarter Travel Gold Mark in recognition of its outstanding commitment to promoting the use of more sustainable active travel. By prioritising walking, cycling and the greater use of public transport to and from their central location in the heart of Dublin, Trinity is setting a leading example of how large institutions can deliver real, positive and lasting changes that benefit both.”
