During their visit, the royal couple met with Provost Dr Linda Doyle, Vice President for Global Engagement Dr Emma Stokes, and a number of Romanian staff and students before taking a tour of Trinity’s historic campus and of the Old Library where they viewed the precious Book of Kells.

The Brian Ború harp was among the items on display in the Long Room

The 9th century manuscript, written and illustrated by Columban monks, is famous throughout the world for the incomparable intricacy of its decoration. Written on vellum (prepared calf skin), the manuscript contains the four Gospels of the New Testament, written in Latin, and is richly illuminated with Celtic knot motifs intertwined with plant, animal and human imagery.

Laura Shanahan, Head of Research Collections, accompanied Her Majesty Margareta and His Royal Highness Prince Radu through the Old Library and shared the history of the Book of Kells and of Trinity’s collections, as well as the research that is undertaken on those collections.
