Bridge to College Leadership Project 2023: Sustainability

Posted on: 11 May 2023

Bridge to College is one of Trinity Access Programme’s initiatives which aims to help Transition Year students develop key skills and give them the experience they need to advance and thrive in third level education. Over 370 students from mainly DEIS schools are represented in this years showcase and have worked in teams to complete the student-led and managed leadership project on sustainability.

Thursday was a full day of events for the participants as they came to Trinity’s campus to showcase their work to students, staff and judges.  Projects were assessed by the judges on content, teamwork, creativity and participation.   The students enjoyed a campus tour, lunch in the Dining Hall and ended the day with a graduation ceremony where three groups were announced as winners.

During the project, each group worked with a Trinity student mentor who acted as a guiding presence throughout the process. Students on this project developed the key skills of project management, independent learning, teamwork, communication and using technology in practical ways. This sustainability project let students put into use many of the skills they learned on the programme.

Congratulations to the following winners:

Blakestown Community School - Peer Mentoring in Sustainability

Blakestown worked with second class students to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability as well as building a mentoring relationship. They prepared interactive workshops where they made models of solar powered windmills and race cars with the students.

Holy Family Community School - Focused Fashion

This group of 16 students raised awareness around fast fashion in their school. They ran a highly successful week-long clothing swap in their school. They recruited teachers to do an online fashion show which was brilliantly showcased through their social media content.

Pobalscoil Iosolde/Palmerstown CS - Pobal Stops Food Waste

The theme of this group project was food waste. A major highlight was a series of workshops planned, run and organised by the group with first year students in the school on food waste, how to design their diet in more sustainable ways and activities to raise their awareness on the topic.

Well done to all involved!
