Director of Internship - Role and Responsibilities

Internship constitutes the first year of practice post award of the MB, BAo BCh degree. It leads the graduate to full registration with the Irish Medical Council. The Director of Internship will have delegated responsibility for oversight and development of the school’s intern programme including the academic Track, from recruitment to achieving the certificate of experience. The Director will play a strategic role in promoting and enabling a supportive learning environment and enhancing internship studies working closely with the Head of School and the Intern Network executive. 
The responsibilities of the Director of Research will include to:

At College Level 

  1. Represent the School on the appropriate College-wide fora, co-ordinating liaison between the School and the Dean of Research, the Research Committee, and its sub-committees as appropriate. 
  2. Represent the School with external bodies in matters relating to Internship. 
  3. Represent the School in relation to arrangements for, and governance of, cross-institutional Internship activities. 

At School Level 

  1. With the Intern network Director, co-chair the School of Medicine Internship planning meetings. The membership includes representatives of School administration, clinical staff associated with internship and lecturer registrars involved in teaching interns.
  2. Develop a strategy for internship in the school in consultation with the School Executive, taking due regard of college policy.
  3. Facilitate co-ordination of School and College policy in relation to internship and liaise with the clinical partners to deliver the programme.
  4. Make recommendations regarding the resource allocation to internship funding in the School of Medicine to the Head of School and School Executive. 
  5. Report on School of Medicine internship funding activity to the School Executive and Head of School.

Research

  1. To undertake evaluation and scholarship in relation to the internship programme.
  2. Develop strategic initiatives to enhance Internship activities.
  3. Communicate Internship activities internally and externally and highlight strategically important initiatives to School of Medicine Executive.
  4. Liaise with the NDTP and Irish Medical Council on internship matters.
  5. Facilitate intern engagement with the school executive and with the college.

Appointment 

The Director of Internship will be nominated for appointment by, and will report to, the Head of School. The term of appointment will be two years, renewable for a further two and commencing on the day following the end of Trinity Term of the relevant year. The Director will be a full-time member of the academic staff of the school and will be appointed from among those on the Associate Professor grade or above. Nomination for this appointment should be submitted to Council and Board for approval in the normal way. The Director will be an ex-officio member of the School Executive.
