Welcome to the Academic Unit of Neurology

Orla Hardiman, Head of Discipline

Academic Neurology is a newly formed Unit in Trinity College.  We are part of the School of Medicine, located in the Biomedical Sciences Institute with close links to colleagues at TCIN, and the Neurology Units at St. James', Tallaght and Beaumont Hospitals.

The Unit focusses on four main themes.  These are Neurodegeneration, Epilepsy, Stroke Medicine and  Neurophamacology.

We have active multidisciplinary programmes in Motor Neurone Disease, Frontotemporal Dementia, Young Onset Neurodegeneration, Epilepsy and Multiple Sclerosis.

As part of the ENCALS Consortium we are actively in collaborative research with national centres of neurodegeneration, including centres in the UK, Canada, Germany, Belgium and  Italy.  We are partners in a Framework 7 project (EUROMOTOR) and two JPND projects (SOPHIA and BIOMARKAPD).

Our group is actively engaged in clinical scientific outreach programmes.  We have contributed to a number of documentaries  including Colm Murray’s The Inside Track, a compelling story of his quest for scientific information about Motor Neurone Disease, broadcast by RTE in January 2012.
