Biography

Dr Natalia Muñoz-Wolf was appointed as Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine - School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin (TCD) in 2020. She was an awardee of the 2019 Emerging Investigator Awards funded by the Irish Health Research Board. She leads the Translational Respiratory Immunology Lab (TRIL) base in the School of Medicine, Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute, one of the flagship institutes in Trinity College Dublin. The main research focus of the Translational Respiratory Immunology Lab is to unveil the role of gut microbiome and gut derived metabolites on chronic lung conditions (mainly Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)) and respiratory infections. Her lab also focuses on harnessing the power of the microbiome and the gut-lung axis of immune regulation to enhance efficacy of injectable and mucosal vaccines against Streptococcus pneumoniae. Her lab work closely with our clinical partners at the Department of Clinical Medicine in Tallaght University Hospital in Dublin and collaborators in the School of Biochemistry & Immunology TCD, University College Cork and Maynooth University in Ireland as well as international partners in the University of Uruguay. Dr Muñoz-Wolf earned her Biochemistry degree in the School of Sciences, University of Uruguay which focused on immunomodulation by helminths. She completed a 5-year PhD in Chemistry which she carried out at the Department of Biotechnology, University of La Republica - Uruguay and Institut Pasteur Lille - France. Her PhD focused on the use of microbial-derived molecules as therapeutics and vaccines adjuvants for pneumococcal pneumonia. In 2013 she joined the Adjuvant Research Group led by Prof. Ed Lavelle at Trinity College to complete her postdoctoral studies. During her postdoc she addressed the mode of action of particulate adjuvants for optimisation of T cell responses. In parallel she continued to develop her research on lung diseases for which she received two prestigious awards: The 2017 Thomas Mitchell Medal of Excellence awarded by the IRC for being the highest ranked postdoctoral fellow in Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and the 2018 Fellowship Award by the Federation of European Microbiological Societies. She established her independent lab, the Translational Respiratory Immunology Lab (TRIL) at the School of Medicine, TCD in 2019. She has co-supervised several undergraduate, PhD and master"s research projects in immunology at TCD. She contributed as a lecturer in the Infection and Disease module of the Immunology degree and Postgraduate courses in TCD, and is a member of the Executive Board and Outreach Committee of the Irish Society for Immunology where she serves as the Communications Lead for the Society.
