Prof. Peter Stone, Head of the Political Science Department, attended a Youth Summit at which Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, spoke. The event was held on Friday, 3 February at the Smock Alley Theatre. Stone was accompanied by four of the department's postgraduate students.

Prof. Peter Stone, Head of the Political Science Department, recently attended a book presentation to President Michael D. Higgins. The event, held at Áras an Uachtaráin on Wednesday, 8 February, saw Peter Emerson present a copy of his book The Punter’s Guide to Democracy to the president.

Peter Stone, Head of the Political Science Department, was recently interviewed for an article on Citizens’ Assemblies. The article, written by Eva Talmadge, was entitled “Citizens’ Assemblies: Are They the Future of Democracy?” and was published on 1 February.

The inaugural lecture of Sharyn O'Halloran, Chair of Political Economy (2020) took place on November 1st in the Robert Emmet Theatre. The lecture examined “How can Artificial Intelligence Improve Public Policy?”

Peter Stone, Head of Department in Political Science, spoke on September 7th at a public roundtable on “Four Fallacies of Deliberation: The Future of Democracy in Europe.” The event took place in Vienna in conjunction with a meeting of COST Action CA17135: “Constitution-Making & Deliberative Democracy.”

Prof. Peter Stone, Head of the Political Science Department, has won the Lee Eisler Service Award from the Bertrand Russell Society. The prize is awarded occasionally “to recognize distinguished service to the Society.”

The School of Social Sciences and Philosophy is delighted to welcome Professor Sharyn O’Halloran as the new Chair of Political Economy, joint between Economics and Political Science. The Chair is funded by the HEA as part of the Senior Academic Leadership Initiative.

Professor Peter Stone recently published a review in Philosophy Now. Stone reviewed Why Does Inequality Matter? by leading political philosopher T.M. Scanlon. Stone unpacks Scanlon's complex account of the different reasons people might have for caring about equality.

Professor Peter Stone was interviewed recently on the Finding Genius podcast. “Revolutionizing Democracy: The Benefits of Sortition and Selected Citizens Councils,” discussed the rise of randomly-selected citizen assemblies, with a focus on the Irish experience.

Congratulations to Department of Political Science PhD student Markéta Odlová and Assistant Professor Jeffrey Ziegler on securing TRiSS funding to develop their projects: Minorities and the Military: The Effects of Conscription on Political Engagement (M. Odlová) and Computational Tools for Survey Experiments in the Social Sciences (J. Ziegler).

Dr. Ziegler joins Trinity from Emory University. In his research, he extends computational methods to the social sciences, focusing on the use of multi-media data (text, audio, images) and experiments.

Dr Paskhalis joins Trinity from New York University, where he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Social Media and Politics. He received his PhD in Social Research Methods from the London School of Economics. His research focuses on political communication, comparative politics and computational analysis of text.
