Role:

Teaching Fellow in Philosophy (24-month post, starting 1 August 2024).

The Purpose of the Role:

The purpose of this post is to contribute to the teaching of undergraduate students in the Department of Philosophy. The successful applicant will be required to contribute to the teaching of: History, Philosophy and Ethics of Science; Epistemology; Metaphysics and Moral Philosophy.

The development of learning environments that are consistent with modern teaching and learning practices in their being flexible, student-centered, accessible and making use of appropriate technology.

Person Requirements

Qualifications

Essential

  • An excellent academic record including a PhD in Philosophy (or cognate discipline).
  • A significant track record in the teaching of undergraduate Philosophy by lectures, tutorials or seminars.
  • An ability to lead and deliver a History, Philosophy an Ethics of Science module to students in the Faculty of Science.
  • An ability to lead and deliver undergraduate modules in more than one of the following areas: Metaphysics; Epistemology or Moral Philosophy.

Desirable

  • An ability to provide supervision of final year undergraduate students across a wide range of subject areas within Philosophy.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Ability to teach both large (i.e. 100+ students) and smaller classes of undergraduates which include both specialists and non-specialists in Philosophy.

Desirable

  • Evidence of ability to deliver research-led teaching.
  • Experience of module leadership, module development and module management.
  • Experience with Blackboard or an equivalent Virtual Learning Environment.

Skills

  • Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Excellent presentation skills and the ability to enthuse listeners.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to effectively manage a demanding workload.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
