What does it mean to judge - politically, morally, in public life? Hannah Arendt left that question unfinished. This symposium brings together philosophers from Ireland, Germany, Canada, and the United States to examine Samantha Fazekas' new book, Hannah Arendt's Unwritten Chapter on Judging (De Gruyter, 2025), which reconstructs Arendt's theory of judgment through a close reading of Kant's aesthetic.
Fazekas argues that Arendt's appropriation of Kantian reflective judgment offers a model for political judgment that is neither purely formal nor detached from the worldly, public character of political life.
About the author
Samantha Fazekas is a Teaching Fellow in Philosophy at Trinity College Dublin. Her research focuses on Kantian and post-Kantian philosophy, with a particular interest in the work of Hannah Arendt. She completed her PhD at Trinity College Dublin in 2023.
