Respect for human rights and equality are two of the values on which the EU is founded, and most of us assume they go hand in hand. In her lecture, Adina looked more closely at that assumption. She examined how philosophers have justified human rights and argued that those justifications don't rest on as strong a conception of equality as we might expect. She also made the case that there is room to develop a more egalitarian understanding of human rights.

The evening was chaired by Professor John Divers, Head of the Department of Philosophy, and the talk was followed by a wide-ranging Q&A, with questions from the floor.

Our thanks to Adina for a thought-provoking lecture, and to everyone who came along on the night.

The series continues this Thursday, 8 October, when political scientists Dr Jesse Dillon Savage and Dr Thomas Chadefaux discuss Europe's security choices in the Trump era. The final event takes place on Thursday 15 October, with sociologist Dr Larissa Meier on the changing face of protest in Europe.
