Athena Swan began in the UK in 2005 and started up in Ireland in 2015. While initially concentrating on improving equality for female academics in STEM, Athena Swan now includes all academic and professional staff across universities. Engagement with Athena Swan is a key pillar of Ireland’s national strategy for gender equality, with progress linked to institutional eligibility for funding from Ireland’s major research agencies.
The Athena Swan Self-Assessment Teams across Trinity are looking at supporting equity and equality across all intersectionalities such as ethnic background, sexual orientation and disability, among others. The awards gave the teams involved the chance to pause and celebrate the hard work and effort of all involved, before moving forward with their respective Athena Swan Action Plan implementations.
