HAU11010 Sources and Methods 2

This module introduces students to some of theories used in the analysis of visual images, objects and structures.

The course will examine the historiography of art history, tracing the development of different lenses through which the meaning of artworks and buildings have been explored. Students will be introduced to key theoretical concepts and their protagonists, together with some of the main secondary sources used in the study of the History of art and architecture.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon the successful completion of this module students should be able to:

  • the diverse and multifaceted nature of art historical enquiry
  • Critically discuss the theories that have had a significant impact on art-historical research and writing over the last centuries.
  • Analyse the origins of those theories, and their relevance to art history as an academic discipline
