HA7046: Beyond the image. Alchemy and Astrology

This modules explores astrological and alchemical images in their cultural role for the development of natural and social sciences from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

- The module is assessed by a combination of oral presentations, practical exercises and written assignments.
The seminars will explore theories of the image to inquire into cultural practices of seeing, and the agency of the image.
Through an examination of objects, manuscripts, and early printed books from collections at the Trinity College Library, Chester Beatty, and the Marsh’s Library in Dublin; as well as visits to observatories of Dunsik, Armagh and Birr, the students will analyse the interrelation between seeing, drawing, thinking and acting, in the creation of images and allegories.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Critically discuss image theories for the study of artifacts and art objects
- Identify the main sources for astrological and alchemical allegories
- Reflect critically on the creation of scientific and allegorical images
- Apply interdisciplinary methodologies to the study of and early modern astrological or alchemical image
- Complete a written and oral presentation of a self-motivated inquiry into an astrological, astronomical or alchemical image.
