Dr McMackin is an Assistant Professor in the Discipline of Physiology, as well as the Director of Equity, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for the School of Medicine. She completed her undergraduate degree in Neuroscience in Trinity College Dublin, going on to complete her PhD in Clinical Medicine in the Academic Unit of Neurology. She now leads a clinical research team which employs electrophysiological modalities, including electroencephalography (EEG) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to characterize neural network dysfunction in health and disease.
To date, Dr McMackin’s research has largely focused on developing spatiotemporally precise measures of cortical network dysfunction which can be applied to the early detection and prognostication of neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Huntington’s disease. Dr McMackin also consults on the application of these measures for testing of neurotherapeutic interventions across neurological conditions. Simultaneously, Dr McMackin has worked on the overlap between endocrine and neuropeptide signaling for over a decade. Dr McMackin’s team are now working to examine sex-specific effects on brain network function with aging.
