Biography

Lucy Norris B. A. Mod, MSc Mol. Med. PhD is a Senior Research Fellow at the Dept of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Lucy graduated from Trinity College Dublin with an honours degree in Biochemistry and was awarded a PhD for her work investigating platelet activation in pregnancy, pre-eclampsia and oral contraception. She is the Principal Investigator of Coagulation Research group at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and has over 30 years’ experience in the area of  thrombosis research in pregnancy, hormone therapy and in gynaecological cancers.  The group comprises of basic scientists, obstetricians, gynaecologists and oncologists, several of whom have successfully completed PhD and MD degrees under her supervision.

The main focus of her group is the development of biomarkers and risk models for predicting and preventing thrombosis and the role of coagulation gene expression in the aetiology of ovarian cancer.  Current studies include the development of biomarkers to predict thrombosis in patients undergoing chemotherapy and  an investigation into the mechanisms of chemotherapy associated venous thrombosis (funded by the HRB).  She has also produced a patient information leaflet  "Gynaecological Cancer and the risk of Blood clots" and has worked with gynaecological cancer support groups to increase awareness of the risk of thrombosis.

She is a member of the Equality Diversity and Inclusion committee in the School of Medicine and which was successfully awarded Athena Swan Silver award.  She is co-editor in chief of the journal "Thrombosis Update" and a member of the editorial board of Thrombosis Research and European Journal of Gynaecological Oncology.
