Biography

I am an Assistant Professor at the School of Law, Trinity where I teach Medical Law and Ethics. My research focuses primarily on legal aspects of reproduction, encompassing assisted reproduction, maternity care and termination of pregnancy. I have been PI on two Research Ireland COALESCE grants. The CORALE Study (Conscientious Objection After Repeal: Law and Ethics) (2021-2024) examined conscientious objection in termination of pregnancy in Ireland. The CONTENT Study (Consent for Medically Indicated Interventions in Childbirth) (2025-2027) explores whether the legal requirements for consent in labour/birth are met in practice. Alongside my academic work I am a practising barrister in the fields of healthcare law and data protection. I have extensive experience in complex clinical negligence actions, as well as in the Coroner’s Court. My work in practice informs and enhances my academic research. From 2020-2025 I was appointed by the Government as a Commissioner at the Law Reform Commission where I led the publication of the Report on a Regulatory Framework for Adult Safeguarding.
