Research Expertise
Description
My primary area of research is focused on safeguarding older people and older person care. I have also undertaken work related to child welfare and protection and domestic violence. I am involved in research groups related to missed care, community nursing and person centred care.Projects
- Title
- Person-centredness in Healthcare Curricula
- Summary
- This project builds on an already established and strong global partnership that exists to advance person-centred healthcare. The aim of the project is to develop an international curriculum framework for educating future person-centred healthcare practitioners. Person-centred healthcare is an approach to healthcare delivery that places the beliefs and values of patients and families at the centre of decision-making. In doing this, healthcare practitioners need to be able to treat patients and families as actively engaged partners in care. This is achieved through person-centred assessment, the design of a care plan arising from that assessment and implementing the care plan in partnership with patients and families. All of this is supported by organisational cultures that are committed to person-centred healthcare at all levels of the organisation/system. There is a global evidence-base showing the benefits of a person-centred approach to healthcare delivery at individual, unit and systems levels. However, to our knowledge few curricula exist that are person-centred and that focus on educating future person-centred healthcare practitioners and leaders. Whilst many curricula have some components of person-centredness built into particular courses, there are very few curriculum frameworks in place to educate healthcare practitioners. So this project aims to address this agenda by developing an international curriculum framework for educating future person-centred healthcare practitioners. We will do this by achieving the following objectives: 1. Co-creating a set of themes to underpin healthcare curricula that can be used to develop person- centred practitioners who work with people in a variety of contexts. 2. Identifying learning outcomes and professional qualities that meet the needs of stakeholders in the partner countries. 3. Generating a new curriculum framework for the development of the future person-centred graduate practitioner. 4. Designing a suite of stakeholder-focused innovative assessment strategies for use in undergraduate and postgraduate curricula.

- Decide4Care
- Summary
- Key hospital acquired adverse events in older inpatient populations are pneumonia, delirium, urinary tract infections and pressure injuries, known as 'Failure to Maintain' adverse events. These adverse events are associated with missed or rationed nursing care and are therefore susceptible to factors which influence levels of missed care. These factors include skill mix and staffing levels, workload, and the increasing intensification of healthcare. Missed or rationed nursing care is linked to poor outcomes for both nurses and patients, with quality of care and patient safety as core concerns. The high rates and costs of these adverse events make Failure to Maintain events a public health issue, rather than simply a hospital/ health services issue. International reports on these high frequency adverse events are mainly study based, rather than population based, and this limits cross-country comparison to better understand contributing factors for prevention and harm minimisation.
